South Africa temporarily closed its main border with Mozambique as protesters burned vehicles in Maputo. The country’s main port suspends taking cargo over security concerns. The death toll rises to about two dozen people as the police continue to use live bullets against protesters. The government has placed restrictions on internet use and threatens to deploy the country’s military.
With the current insecurity and determination by the youthful population to continue the protests, and the resolve of the government to end these with force, what are the implications for:
- The stability of the Southern African state that has a history of a long Post-independence civil war?
- The six neighbouring states of Mozambique which includes South Africa? Already the border closure signals an escalation of the situation.
- The insurgency in the north which has the potential to feed off the general indignation to expand its tentacles?
